Helen Ramson

January 8, 1930 — October 5, 2020

POLAND — Beloved mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, Helen Anne Ramson, 90, passed away Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, at Hospice of the Valley Hospice House, with her family near.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, John, and a sister, Emma Cain.

The daughter of Florence and Raymond Park Eckels, she was born in Warren, Jan. 8, 1930. She graduated from Warren G. Harding High School and later took college courses at Youngstown College.

Helen leaves behind three children, John (Joanie) Ramson, Jeff (Jane) Ramson and Janice (Mark) Takach; and two siblings, Harlene Huffstetler and Forest Eckels. In addition, she will be missed dearly by her grandchildren, Jayme (Patrick) Ramson McGuire, John (Nicole) Ramson, Jimmy (Krista) Ramson, Mark (Laura) Takach, Emily Rollin and Hanna Rollin; and great-grandchildren, Declan and Cassidy McGuire, John Michael and Jacob Ramson, Riley Ramson and Anna Takach; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen resided at Shepherd of the Valley for the past nine years after selling her impeccably-cared-for ranch home on Youngstown’s Birch Hill Drive, which she and her husband built and where they raised their three children. Helen later hosted decades of memorable holiday dinners, surrounded by family.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Youngstown since 1950. There, she was head of Christmas Tree Lane several times, served as president of United Methodist Women, was a liturgist, and also participated in Quilting Club, Sunday School and Monday Musical Club.

An avid cross-stitcher and quilter, she won numerous first place ribbons at the Canfield Fair.

Always a competitor, Helen particularly enjoyed playing cards with her kids and grandkids, golfing, bowling and board games. She never missed an opportunity to stealthily place a unique word on her scrabble board, many times introducing her competitors to a word they’d never heard before. She was considered the queen of crossword puzzles among her family and friends.

She also had a passion for traveling and toured Israel and Switzerland in addition to many domestic destinations.

Private family funeral services will be held for Helen; she will be laid to rest at Crown Hill Burial Park, Vienna.
