Bernard Bindas

BOARDMAN — Bernard M. Bindas passed away Tuesday, Dec. 15, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, after battling pneumonia. His wife, Ruth, was with him at the time of his passing. They had been married since 1960.
He was born in 1927, the youngest of 11 children to John and Maria Havrila Bindas.
Bernie lived in the area his entire life. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and received combat infantry training at Ft. Benning, Ga. Upon discharge, he was employed by U.S. Steel in the metallurgical laboratory.
In 1956, when the City of Youngstown opened the main fire station downtown, Bernie joined the Youngstown Fire Department. He retired from the fire department as a captain in 1989.
After retirement, he and his wife, Ruth, traveled extensively both nationally and internationally. Their favorite trip was a tour of China in 2005.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Bernie enjoyed nature and fed birds year round. His favorite chair was by a window, where he could watch any wildlife that happened to pass. In his younger years, he enjoyed golf, fishing and hiking. He used to say he would take a book with him fishing, throw in his line and hope the fish didn’t bite. He was an eternal optimist and he lived his life taking “time to smell the roses.” Bernie loved to visit and laugh with friends and family, and he said many times, “it’s been a really good life.”
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. John Koval for his kindness and the compassionate care he gave to Bernie, along with the support he gave to the family during this difficult time.
Bernie was a loving and caring husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; and his daughter, Susan of Coconut Creek, Fla. He is also survived by his nieces, Patricia Grinstead, Barbara Campolito, Maxine Gordon and Karen Armeni; and his nephew, Robert Bindas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Jacobson and Helen Wallace; and brothers, Andrew, Cyril, Edward, George, John, Joseph, Michael and Paul Bindas.
There are no calling hours or services. Internment will be in Green Haven Memorial Gardens in Canfield.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
