Wayne L Bowen

Surrounded by the love of his family, Wayne L. Bowen, 78, entered into eternal rest on July 31,
2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, hard work, humility, and unwavering devotion to his
family.

Born on December 18, 1947, in Greenville, Pennsylvania, Wayne was the beloved son of the late Richard and Mary Zuschlag Bowen.

A 1965 graduate of Greenville High School, Wayne answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army shortly after graduation. He proudly served from June 27, 1966, until January 30, 1969, including service in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Specialist 5 (E-5). In recognition of his service, he received several military decorations, highlighted by the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service, along with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. His military service reflected the patriotism, humility, and quiet strength that would define his life.

On January 29, 1972, Wayne married Andrea Glista. Together they built a marriage of more than 55 years founded on unwavering love, loyalty, faithfulness, and devotion to one another. Even as Wayne's own health declined, his greatest concern remained Andrea. Until his final day, he continued to put her needs before his own, finding ways to care for, comfort, and protect the woman he had shared his life with for more than fifty-five years. Andrea, in turn, remained faithfully by his side, sharing his room at Greenbrier and surrounding him with the same love and devotion that had defined their life together.

Following his military service, Wayne returned home and pursued engineering studies at Youngstown State University before ultimately beginning a distinguished 37-year career with Norfolk Southern Railway as a mechanic. He was known for his remarkable work ethic, exceptional mechanical ability, and willingness to help anyone in need. Whether repairing railroad equipment, fixing a neighbor's lawn mower, or helping family with an engine that would not start, Wayne never hesitated to lend his knowledge and his hands. He took great pride in teaching those skills to his children, passing along not only his mechanical talents but also the values of hard work, perseverance, and helping others without expecting anything in return.

Wayne found peace in the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, biking, kayaking, traveling, and spending time in nature. He loved solving puzzles and tackling projects that challenged his mind, but his greatest joy was always his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and an extraordinarily proud grandfather who treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren and celebrated each of their accomplishments.

Wayne is survived by his beloved wife, Andrea; his four children, Patrick (Tracey) Bowen of San Diego, California, Matthew (Carla) Bowen of Canfield, Ohio, Natalie (Tim) Pappagallo of Mineral Ridge, Ohio, and Richard (Jen) Bowen of Hudson, Ohio; his nine cherished grandchildren, Olivia, Bryce, Madison, Morgan, Mason, Timmy, Dominic, Cameron, and Ryan; his sister, Maxine (John) Hamilton of Farmington, Arkansas; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in- law; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

The Bowen family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the physicians, caregivers, nurses, family members, and friends who supported Wayne throughout his journey. Your exceptional care, compassion, and encouragement provided strength and comfort as Wayne courageously fought and defeated cancer before ultimately succumbing to other health challenges. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

Wayne's life was defined by faithfulness to his country, his family, and an honest day's work. He believed there was very little that could not be repaired with patience, determination, and the right tools. More importantly, he taught those around him that the greatest measure of a person is not what they accomplish for themselves, but how willingly they use their talents to help others.

Wayne never sought recognition or praise. He simply believed that if someone needed help and he had the ability to provide it, you showed up and got to work. His example of humility, service, and unconditional love will continue to guide his family for generations to come.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday, August 10, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Higgins Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel. A prayer service will be held at 11:00 a.m. immediately following calling hours. Family and friends are invited to then travel in procession to Calvary Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with military honors in recognition of his faithful service to our nation.
