Austintown

Austintown .... With heavy hearts but profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we celebrate the life of Stephen R. Markulin Jr., who went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 12, 2025. Steve was a remarkable musician, a beloved brother, an inspiring uncle, and a cherished friend, whose creative spirit left an indelible mark on the world of music. Born on January 2, 1952, Steve grew up in Youngstown, Ohio. He attended Austintown Fitch High School where he excelled in athletics and later worked at R & R Inc. in sales. His passion for music blossomed early. As an original member of the iconic band Glass Harp, he shared the stage with legendary guitarist Phil Keaggy, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship. Together, they explored the realms of sound in a unique era of music history.

Steve co-wrote his first song, “Karrie Ann,” at the age of 16. He later made the pivotal decision to join his cousin's band, The Human Beinz, where he played bass guitar and lent his voice to the unforgettable hit “Nobody But Me,” recorded in 1968, by the original band. Despite his youth, Steve’s immense talent shone brightly, even if he had to miss the album cover photo due to still being in high school. With key roles in these two most noteworthy Youngstown bands, Steve was also enormously proud of his Croatian heritage and played in several orchestras, including the “New Balkans.” Those who had the pleasure of knowing Steve revered him not only for his musical prowess but also for his kindness and warm-hearted nature.

Steve is survived by his family/best friends Bud, Debi, Ron, Heaven and Cierra, his sister Diane Scott, sister-in-law Judy Hamrick, aunt Louise Repko, nephew John (Kristin) Rosan, nieces Cheryl Schlunt and Tammy (James) Vaughn II, grand-nephews Stephen Rosan, David (Kahlia) Schlunt, and Derek (Liz) Schlunt, grand-niece Erin Rosan and several cousins and great-grand nephews. He will also be missed by his friends and neighbors. Steve was preceded in death by his loving wife of 39 years, Nancy Markulin, for whom he wrote and performed the song "Forever Love" at her graveside Memorial Service, his stepson James "Jimi" Mayhew, his parents Stephen and Mildred Markulin, and his brothers-in-law Howard Hamrick and Larry Scott. His family and friends will cherish his memory, celebrating the joy and inspiration he brought into their lives.

As we say goodbye to Steve, let us remember to celebrate the beautiful melody he created in life, and the lasting harmony of love he leaves behind.

He will forever be loved and missed by many friends and neighbors. The family requests memorial donations be made to the Croatian Fraternal Union Scholarship Foundation, Markulin-Rosan Scholarship Fund, 100 Delaney Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15235.At Steve's request there will be no funeral services.
