Robert Thorton, Sr

Austintown ---- Services will be held at 9:30 A.M. on Wednesday at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, for Robert J. Thornton Sr., of Austintown, age 83, who died Thursday afternoon at his residence.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Robert was born June 30, 1921 the son of Thomas A. and Marjorie Braun Thornton, and was a life-long area resident.
Robert was of the Catholic faith. He was employed by the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company where he worked in the Blooming Mill as an Electrical Engineer until his
retirement. Robert then taught Electronics at the New Castle School of Trades for twenty
years and was in business with his brother for several years.
He was a very influential member of AA for 47 years where he touched many lives.
He was a precinct committeeman for Austintown Township, was a volunteer for Angels for Animals and was also a VA volunteer.
Robert is a W.W.II veteran where he flew with the 8th Air Corp and was shot down on his 24th mission. He was a Prisoner of War for 14 months, and was commander of Steel Valley Chapter 13. He was also State Commander for American prisoners of war, and is
DJVC of the State Department of Ohio.
His wife, the former Jessie P. Mylott whom he married June 29, 1946 died February 4, 1997.
He is survived by two daughters Carole Bob Baluch and Mary Jim Shina both of Austintown, one son Thomas Leslie Thornton of McDonald, one brother Charles
R.Catherine Thornton of Boardman, seven grandchildren: Rob and Mike Baluch, Dr. Jim
and Jason Shina, Aaron and Mitchell Thornton and Dana Renee Tony Sorick, three great
grandchildren: Judy, Tristen and Camran Sorick, and also several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son Robert J. Thornton, Jr., two brothers Tom and John Thornton and a sister.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 5:00PM - 8:00PM at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Austintown Chapel.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery following the service on Wednesday.
