Oscar Jene Smith

BOARDMAN - Oscar Jene Smith, 85, of Boardman passed away peacefully early Thursday morning June 19, 2025 at Mercy House Hospice of the Valley.

He was born on July 5, 1939 in Lowellville Ohio, a son of Oscar and Marie (Tubbs) Smith. 

Oscar graduated from Rayen High School in Youngstown where he was a standout athlete competing in Football and Track.

He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1957, was stationed in Staten Island, and committed the next four years to the service of his country.

It was during this time he met and married the love of his life, Lorena (Archibald). They spent the next 66 years making a life together. Lorena passed away last September.

Together they had three children, Daniel , Laura, and Shari, seven grandchildren , and thirteen great grandchildren.

After being honorably discharged from the Coast Guard, Oscar went to work for PSE&G of New Jersey where he worked 42 years, retiring as an Engineering Technician and Environmental Specialist. While working and raising his own family Oscar was able to find the time to “give back” in the role of youth sports coach. He had a real passion for mentoring and passing on the lessons of dedication and sportsmanship. 

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Oscar's family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Rd. Poland, OH 44514.
