Myron Ullman

June 1, 1921 — June 1, 2004

Canfield. . . . services will be Monday at 11:00 AM in Canfield United Methodist Church for
Myron E. Ullman, long-time resident of Canfield, passed away at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 1st, his 83rd birthday.
Mr. Ullman was born in Youngstown on June 1, 1921 to the late Helen S. and Myron E. Ullman. He graduated from South High School in 1939 and The Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey in 1940.
Ullman enrolled in the Engineering College at Cornell University in 1939. In October, 1942, he was inducted into the Army Corps of Engineers and attended the ASTP Program at Mississippi State University prior to serving as a staff sergeant in Europe during World War II. Upon his discharge in January, 1946, he returned to Cornell University with his wife, June Cunningham of Youngstown, and earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering the same year. Ullman continued his studies at Cornell and earned his M.S. in Engineering, Industrial Design in 1948. Ullman was also an instructor in Accounting for the University?s Engineering College.
The couple returned to Youngstown in 1948, where Ullman began his fifty-year business career. Possessing a sharp and creative mind, Ullman had a knack for finding practical design solutions to sometimes complex manufacturing problems. During the 50?s, Ullman helped lead the dishwasher design team at the Youngstown Kitchens Division of Mullins Manufacturing. Many of his 10 patented designs are still in use on dishwashers today. Since that time, Ullman has earned almost 40 other patents dealing with products as diverse as floor mats, boat trailers, and bottle caps.
A fifty-year resident of Canfield, Ullman was active in many community and charitable endeavors. He served the Village and City of Canfield for 17 years as the chairman of the Board of Public Affairs and as chairman of the Canfield Joint Recreation Board for 6 years. He was also a trustee of the Canfield United Methodist Church, the Mahoning County Correctional Board, and the Oak Hill Cemetery Fund. In 1987, Ullman was honored as Canfield?s ?Man of the Year? by the Canfield Community Club.
Of his many civic endeavors, Rotary International was the one he loved the most. Ullman joined the Canfield Rotary Club in 1963 and served the organization in many different capacities. In 1966, he initiated the Rotary Youth Exchange program within the Canfield Club and his family housed seven exchange students during the next decade. In addition to serving as the local club?s president in 1967-68, Ullman was named a Paul Harris Fellow and served as District Governor of District 665 in 1989-1990. In 2000, the Canfield Rotary Club named Ullman their ?Rotarian of the Century.? He was, however, most proud of his 37-year perfect attendance record, which began when he joined the club and ended when he and his wife moved to California.
Although he worked well into his 70?s, Ullman and his wife June spent much of the last 20 years traveling. The couple enjoyed visiting their children and grandchildren, cruising with family and friends as well as spending time at their cottage on Kahshe Lake in Ontario. Ullman also found great contentment at the bridge table, often playing 3 or 4 times a week.
Ullman is survived by his wife of 61 years, June C., of Cincinnati, seven children, Myron Cathy of Montrose, Colorado, Carl Kay of Ridgefield, CT, Chris Stubbins Paul of Cincinnati, Curtis Paula of Paradise Valley, Arizona, Gregory of West Chester, Ohio, Gretchen Tisone Mark, of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Deborah Shaw of Fairfield, Ohio, 26 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call Sunday from 5:00 -8:00Pm at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Boardman-Canfield Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Myron E. Ullman Educational Trust of the Canfield Rotary Club.
