Matthew Dean Mastell Sr., passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025, at the age of 74.
Born on April 13, 1951, in Youngstown, a son of the late Malcolm L. and Betty M. Morena Mastell, Dean was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Dean graduated from Struthers High School in 1969 and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, receiving an honorable discharge in 1971 as a Private First Class. Following his military service, he dedicated over 23 years to Struthers City Schools as head custodian, starting his career at the high school, moving on to the elementary school and later retiring from the middle school. His commitment to service extended beyond his work; Dean held numerous leadership roles with the OAPSE - AFSCME Union.
An avid sports enthusiast, Dean was a long-standing member of the Elmton Golf League for over 25 years and showed his passion for coaching through his active involvement with Struthers Little League Baseball and youth co-ed soccer in Poland. His love for the community was further demonstrated when he founded the Struthers Mushball League, where he built their first mushball field. Dean was also an avid Ohio State and Browns fan.
Family was the cornerstone of Dean's life. As a grandfather, Dean shone brightly, attending dance, cheer, marching band, soccer, basketball, cross country, track and field and robotics events that his grandchildren participated in, always cheering them on with his distinct whistle that resonated with love and pride.
Dean is survived by his wife, Rose M. Mogolich Mastell, whom he married July 21, 1973; three children, Melissa (Jim) Swantek of Boardman, Marci (Bryon) Freedy of Boardman, and Matthew D. (Jen) Mastell Jr. of Hubbard; six grandchildren, Lauryn, Natalie, Kendra, Carter, Mason, and Ava; a sister, Melanie Banfield of Poland; three brothers, Michael (Joan) Mastell of Loveland, Mitchell (Terri) Mastell of East Liverpool and Marty Mastell of Mesa, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dean was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Earl Banfield and a sister-in-law, Ronnie Mastell.
