Larry Duane Grimm

YOUNGSTOWN - Larry D. Grimm, 93, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

Larry was born May 27, 1933, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Austin and Viva Wagner Grimm.

He attended South High School, where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth "Alice" Kasperko Grimm. The two eloped to Hagerstown, Maryland, and were married on June 11, 1953.

At the age of 20, Larry was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. After two years of active service, he completed an additional six years in the Army Reserve before he was given an honorable discharge.

Larry worked for Lake Park Tool and Die for two years while continuing his long career with the P&LE Railroad, where he became a chief clerk and worked for 40 years. He finished his career on the railroad with CSX, working there for his final two years before retirement.

Larry was a lifelong member of the Saxon Club and an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church on Mahoning Avenue.

Throughout his life, Larry found joy in the simple things and, most of all, in sharing them with the people he loved. He enjoyed golfing and fishing and spent many years bowling in a league for the Saxon Club. He looked forward to playing cards with friends and family, where the conversation and laughter were every bit as important as the game itself. He also enjoyed talking on his CB radio, making connections and sharing stories over the airwaves under his call sign, Popcorn.

Some of Larry's happiest memories were made traveling with Alice. Whether they were setting off on a new adventure or simply enjoying the journey together, he treasured the places they went, the experiences they shared, and, most importantly, the time spent side by side. After 73 years of marriage, they had a lifetime of memories and stories to share.

As much as Larry enjoyed his hobbies and travels, nothing brought him greater happiness or pride than his family. He loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and was one of their biggest fans. He could often be found in the stands or along the sidelines at their sporting events, proudly cheering them on. Being there for those special moments meant the world to Larry, and his steady presence, encouragement and love will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family.

Besides his beloved wife, Larry leaves behind two children, Sandra Mulligan and her husband, Edward of Poland, Ohio, and Larry Grimm Jr. and his fiancé, Sherry Dickson of Navarre, Florida; five grandchildren, Erin (Paul) Shilling of Poland, Megan (Matt) Mulligan Simon of Poland, Austin (Magen) Grimm of Orlando, Florida, Mackenzie (Kenneth) Hoffman of Poland, and Larryssa (Michael) Ashe of Leesburg, Florida; and eight great-grandchildren, Addison and Logan Shilling, Caleb and Charlotte Simon, Archer and Romy Grimm, and Landon and Eli Ashe. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his nine siblings, Austin McKinley "Jay" Grimm Jr., Helen Grace Grimm, Evelyn Virginia Wright, Howard Edward Grimm, Betty Jane Mounts, Marian Irene Grimm, Lyle Wayne Grimm, Beulah Elaine Shaffer, and Patricia Marie Booth.

Calling hours will be 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, at the historic St. John's Lutheran Church, 1431 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, OH 44509, followed by funeral services starting at 10:30 a.m.

Interment will immediately follow the services at Riverside Cemetery in Poland.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, in Larry's memory.
