New Middletown-Kenneth Wayne Coast, 78, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, February 18, 2026, at Hospice House, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on February 11, 1948, in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, Ken was the son of Alfred Coast and Beverly Graham. A proud graduate of Ellwood City High School, Class of 1966, he began his working life in the steel mills before answering the call to serve his country. Ken enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he earned the rank of Sergeant and served honorably during the Vietnam War. His time in the service reflected his deep sense of duty, strength, and quiet commitment to others.
After his honorable discharge in 1973, Ken returned to the steel industry before beginning a long and dedicated career with the United States Postal Service. Through years of hard work and leadership, he retired as a postal supervisor at the age of 65. He took pride in providing for his family and approached his work with integrity and dependability.
On June 29, 1968, Ken married the love of his life, the former Cheryl Severance. For 57 years, they built a life rooted in loyalty, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Their marriage was a steady foundation for their family and a testament to enduring love.
Ken enjoyed golfing and was a former member of the New Castle Corvette Club, but his greatest joy was found in the stands-cheering on his daughter at sporting events and extracurricular activities. That same devotion continued as he proudly watched his three granddaughters grow. Whether at a game, recital, or school event, he was always there, offering quiet encouragement and steady support. Being "Papa" was one of his most treasured roles.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl; his daughter, Heather McCalla and her husband, Brad, of New Middletown; three cherished granddaughters; one sister, Colleen Wazelle of Warren; two brothers, Dennis Coast and his wife, Kim, of Leavittsburg, and Mark Coast and his wife, Holly, of Pittsburgh; along with many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss his presence.
A service with Military Honors will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, February 23, 2026, at Higgins-Rearden Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel. Family and friends may call from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. prior to the service, where the Ellsworth VFW will provide Military Honors beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and staff of Hospice House for the compassionate care and comfort they provided during Ken's final days.
Ken will be remembered for his steady strength, quiet devotion to his family, and the pride he took in serving both his country and his community. His legacy lives on in the family he loved so deeply.
