Kenneth Bandy

AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will begin Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, for Kenneth Leon Bandy, 93, who died Thursday morning at home.
Kenneth was born Nov. 18, 1921, in Moultrie County, Ill., to George William and Pearl Lucille (Lewis) Bandy.
He was a 1939 graduate of Delavan High School and received an academic scholarship to the University of Illinois, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, with four years of Engineering ROTC.
Kenneth was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a Captain in the Corps of Engineers.
While on assignment in Ledo, India, during World War II, Kenneth met Army Nurse Corp Lt. Catherine E. O'Neil. They were married at the Immaculate Conception Church on Feb. 2, 1946. Upon retirement from active duty in 1946, they returned to Youngstown and moved to Austintown in 1947. Catherine died May 20, 2004, after 58 years of marriage.
He was a registered professional engineer and worked for the Mckay Machine Co. and Wean United as a design engineer and engineering supervisor from 1946, until retiring in 1986. After retirement, Kenneth worked as a self-employed consultant for 10 years.
Kenneth was a charter member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. He served the Parish as a councilman, lector, communion minister and usher. He was involved in the scouting program and was a merit badge counselor for the Youngstown area for several years. Kenneth also was a member of the Men's Club and Senior Citizens Program.
He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth (Warne) Palmer of Howland and Martha (Thomas) Brewer of Jacksonville, Fla.; four sons, James P. (Jean) Westerville, Christopher (Becky) of Canon City, Colo., George E. of Akron and Michael (DeeDee) of Elmhurst, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Karen Bandy of Howland; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Kenneth was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Bandy; a brother, William Faye Bandy; and a daughter-in-law, Sheila Sheley.
Family and friends may call Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Generations of Giving Fund.
