In Loving Memory of Karl R. Von Schwarz ("King Karl") There are some people who leave footprints on this earth so deep that time could never erase them. Karl R. Von Schwarz, lovingly known to family and friends as "King Karl," was one of those extraordinary men. Karl, 92, of North Jackson, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, August 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on June 6, 1934, in Niles, Ohio, he was the son of the late Robert and Mary Ellen (Caswell) Von Schwarz. A proud graduate of Jackson-Milton High School's Class of 1952, Karl built a life defined by integrity, hard work, service, and unwavering love for his family. Karl dedicated many years to serving others through his work. He managed A&P Grocery Store for 18 years before beginning a 27-year career at the General Motors Lordstown Plant, retiring in 1995. Throughout his life, he remained active in his community as a member of First Federated Church in North Jackson, the Kiwanis Club of North Jackson, the Knights of Pythian, and as an Eagle Scout. He also gave generously of his time as a baseball coach, Cub Scout Master, president of the North Jackson Federated Credit Union, and owner of the Buckeye Tree Antique Store until 1997. While Karl accomplished much throughout his life, his greatest joy was found in the people he loved. Above all else, Karl was a devoted husband. Anyone who knew him knew there was one person who owned his heart completely-his beloved wife, Donna Jean. High school sweethearts, they were married on June 24, 1956, and shared 68 wonderful years together until Donna's passing on September 2, 2022. Through every season of life, every joy and hardship, they stood side by side, creating a marriage that was a beautiful example of faithfulness, friendship, and unconditional love. Karl was a proud father to Karla Gibbs (Mark) of North Jackson, Richard Von Schwarz (Tammy) of Columbus, and Mark Von Schwarz of Campbell, Texas. He was the cherished grandfather of nine grandchildren and the proud great-grandfather of twenty-one great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immeasurable joy. He is also survived by his brother, Jack Von Schwarz (Virginia) of Niles; his brother-in-law, Marvin Jones of Arizona; and many extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Donna, his son John Von Schwarz, and his sister Susan Jones. To his family, Karl was so much more than a grandfather. He was a hero, protector, teacher, storyteller, and the steady foundation upon which generations were built. He had a remarkable gift for making every person feel valued, whether through his wisdom, his stories, his laughter, or simply his presence. Karl embraced life with enthusiasm. As a young man, he served as a lifeguard and proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout, laying the foundation for a lifetime of leadership and service. He loved friendly competition and adventure, racing boats and competing on a championship bowling team from 1988 to 1990. Yet no hobby brought him greater joy than golf. The golf course was his happy place, where countless conversations, laughs, and memories were shared with family and friends. His incredible talent earned him eight holes-in-one-an accomplishment few golfers ever experience even once. If you knew Karl, you also knew his Saturdays belonged to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Win or lose, he proudly cheered on the Scarlet and Gray with unwavering loyalty. Karl was equally known for his playful spirit. Family and friends fondly remember his famous "cognitive tests," where he would challenge anyone willing to recite the alphabet backward. To Karl's amazement-and probably a little disbelief-Linda Craig was the only person ever to complete it successfully. The smile on his face that day became one of those unforgettable memories that perfectly captured his love of laughter, friendly competition, and life's simple joys. In his final journey, Karl displayed the same courage, grace, and strength that defined his life. Surrounded by those who loved him most, he faced his final days with dignity and faith. While our hearts ache in his absence, we find comfort knowing he has been welcomed Home. We imagine him reunited with Donna and those who went before him, walking without pain, smiling that unforgettable smile, and perhaps already finding the perfect golf course in Heaven. Karl's greatest legacy isn't found in the championships he won, the holes-in-one he celebrated, or the titles he held. His legacy lives on in the family he loved so fiercely, the values he instilled, the friendships he cherished, and the countless lives he touched simply by being himself. To know Karl was to love him. He was deeply respected, endlessly admired, and impossible to forget. Following Karl's wishes, private family services were held. In lieu of flowers, Karl requested that memorial contributions be made to Animal Charities in his memory. Though our hearts are forever changed, we are profoundly grateful for every lesson, every laugh, every story, and every moment we were blessed to share with him. Until we meet again, King.
