James Edward Might, 98, of Poland Twp., formerly of Canfield passed away Monday afternoon, March 30, 2026, at his home. Dr. Might was born in Springfield, Ohio, April 15, 1927, the son of Walter Might and Elsie Might (nee. Lewis).
Dr. Might graduated as salutatorian from Springfield Central High School in 1945. He served in U.S. Navy in World War II in 1945 as a communications specialist. Following that he attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio graduating in 1949. He attended the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland from 1949 to 1953. He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in 1953.
James married Anna I. Might (nee. Taylor) of Niles, Ohio on June 30, 1952. Dr. Might performed his Medical Residency at the Youngstown Hospital Association; 1953 to 1955 and 1957 to 1959. He was a U.S. Navy physician from 1955 to 1957. His rank at the time was Senior Lieutenant. He was assigned to Military Advisory and Assistance Group, Taipei, Taiwan where he performed a wide variety of duties including infant deliveries, treatment of tropical disease, trauma treatment, and serving as Pharmacy officer of his base. His retired military rank was Lieutenant Commander.
When he returned after serving overseas in Taiwan, Dr. Might became the Chief Medical Resident Northside Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio. He entered private practice in Internal Medicine in Austintown, Ohio in 1959 and continued until 2005 always maintaining a reputation of an exemplary practitioner. His total time practicing medicine in the community was 52 years.
He participated in the management of the local medical system, serving multiple terms as Secretary Treasurer of the Mahoning County Medical Society. He served on the STA Executive Committee of the Youngstown Hospital Association in the 1970's and early 1980's as Secretary. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), Rootstown, Ohio from its founding in 1973 to 2005, 32 years and received awards for his outstanding teaching.
He was a lifelong member of the University of Maryland Medical School Alumni Association. In his retired life he was an active member of the local Civil War Roundtable and the World War II Roundtable and participated as a guest speaker. He was also active in the Mahoning Valley Food drive through his church. Was honored for military service in Honor Flights program, 2009 sponsored by the J.M. Smucker Corporation.
Dr. Might is survived by three children, Linda Might Murphy, Carol Might Lucero, and Kevin Might, his brother Richard W. Might, his niece Deborah, and his nephew Richard Jr. of Springfield, Ohio.
Besides his parents Dr. Might was preceded in death by his wife Anna I. Might, who passed away September 2004, one son James E. Might, Jr. who passed away September 1972.
He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church which played a major part in his upbringing. Dr. Might was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Canfield, Ohio for 36 years and prior to that Grace Lutheran Church in Austintown, Ohio.
Family and friends may call from 10 am to Noon on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Zion Lutheran Church where a Memorial Celebration of Life service will begin at noon.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Dr. Might's name.
