Dr. David E. Gabriel

CANFIELD - Dr. David Edward Gabriel passed away on Wednesday June 19 at his home in Canfield, OH. It is with sadness and appreciation for a life well-lived that family and friends must now say goodbye to David. He was 77, and fortunate to have led a full and diverse life. He will undoubtedly be remembered for his loyalties, his kindness, and humility. 

David was born in Youngstown, OH, on April 8, 1947, graduated from Chaney High School, class of ‘65. He completed his undergraduate studies at Youngstown and Ohio State Universities. In 1971, David was awarded his Doctor of Optometry degree, graduating with honors, at which time he joined his father’s optometric practice on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, OH. He was later associated with Belmont Eye Clinic, where he practiced until his retirement. 

He frequently spoke of his service at the Elkton Federal Prison. So often, inmates would express their gratitude for David’s services, engaging him in good-natured banter. 

His adventurous side led him to all things fast–his Triumph Motorcycle, long-distance biking, and piloting his Cessna aircraft locally and for cross-country getaways. 

He loved completing projects at home, be it growing a garden, improving the landscape, or trying his hand at carpentry. 

He was married to the former Kathleen Elaine Cullinan on March 17, 1973. 

David was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Harold E. Gabriel and Edith (Crum) Gabriel. He leaves his sister, Joan Annan, residing in Cincinnati, OH. 

A memorial service for David is being planned. In lieu of flowers, Kathy has requested donations be made to the Alzheimer's Associations located at 225 N Michigan Ave, 17th floor, Chicago, IL 60601 and specify the funds will go to our local Greater East Ohio Chapter.
