Joel Werner

AUSTINTOWN - Joel E. Werner, 75, formerly of Cleveland, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, following a year-and-a-half battle with ALS.

Joel was born in Cleveland on Oct. 2, 1939, a son of the late Raymond and Gertrude (Schurdell) Werner.

He graduated from Berea High School in 1958, and worked at the Cleveland Illuminating Company for 34 years before retiring in 1993. After retirement, he worked at the Great Lakes Computer Company in West Lake and Something New Florist.

He was a member of the National Guard for six years and a member of the American Legion Post 737 in Lake Milton.

Joel and Mary Kay moved to Austintown in 1997, and traveled extensively, their last and most wonderful trip being to Italy.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians. He loved going to "Bike Nights" on his motorcycle. He was a kind-hearted man who loved people and could carry on a conversation for hours. He was true to his friends and loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

Joel is survived by his loving wife, Mary Kay Cox, whom he married April 13, 1991; his son, Jay (Paula) Werner of Toledo; daughter Jody Werner of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; stepsons Al (Christine) Breinz of Columbiana and Paul Breinz (Tabitha Notar) of Canfield; grandchildren Marleana Breinz, Paul Breinz Jr., Alec Breinz, Lexi Breinz, Amelia and Niko Werner, Alexandria Martin and Michael and Delaney Notar.

He also leaves three brothers, Jim (Dee) Werner of Strongsville, Paul (Marilyn) Werner of Brunswick, Dan (Lisa) Werner of Brunswick; one sister, Ruth (Bill) McMannaway of Wellington; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Helen Werner; and his brother, Raymond Jr.

Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015, at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Pastor Duane Jesse will be officiating.

The family would like to thank Joe's caregiver, Shari Loeb, Hospice of the Valley, Dr. Grossman of University Hospital and Dr. Traikoff.
