NORTH JACKSON - A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Our Lady of the Lakes Parish, St. James Catholic Church in North Jackson, for Rita Marie Edwards, 92, who died Thursday morning, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Rita was born May 16, 1922, in Youngstown, to Joseph A. and Margaret Mary (McCabe) Murphy.
She retired in 1983 from the Ohio Bell Telephone Co., where she worked as a telephone operator for almost 30 years.
Rita was a member of St. James Church, volunteered at Our Lady of Lebanon, and was a great contributor to the Maryknoll Missions.
Her husband, Howard "Bob" Edwards, whom she married Feb. 26, 1949, died Jan. 18, 1997.
Rita is survived by two daughters, Cheryl E. (Ted) Zalac of Canfield, and Jeanne M. Edwards of North Jackson; three sons, Rev. Robert R. Edwards of Salem, Timothy J. (Nancy) Edwards of Austintown and Howie J. (Joanne Franks) Edwards of Youngstown; six grandchildren, Carla (Stephan) Georgiades, Robert Zalac, Erin (Jeff) Gbur, Megan Zalac, Katie Zalac, and Timothy B. Edwards; and two great-grandchildren, Adilynn and Colton Gbur.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Teddy Zalac; two sisters, Mildred Berry and Irene Cavanaugh Jesmont; and three brothers, Joseph, William and Jack Murphy.
Family and friends may call on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, and Monday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to Eternal Word Television Network (E.W.T.N.), 5817 Old Leeds Road, Irondale, AL 35210; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
