Mary Scheetz

FORT MYERS, FLA. - A prayer service will begin at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Church in Canfield, for Mrs. Mary Frances Scheetz, 95, formerly of Canfield, who died Saturday evening at the Hospice House in Poland.

Mary Frances, a daughter of William and Mary Yavorsky Skibo, was born July 4, 1919, in Youngstown.

She graduated from The Rayen School, attended Youngstown College and was a medical assistant to Dr. William L. Mermis.

Mary Frances married William F. Scheetz Nov. 15, 1947. They lived in Canfield for many years, where she was a charter member of St. Michael's Church and St. Michael's Garden Guild. She was Golf Champion at Leffingwell Country Club in 1961 and runner up in 1964, was president of Sleepy Hollow Garden Club in Canfield, served as president of the Garden Forum of the greater Youngstown area, was regional director of the Garden Club of Ohio and was a life member. She also served as Garden Center Chairman for Garden Club of Ohio.

Mary Frances was also involved with and served on the board of the Youngstown Area Arts Council, was a member of Mayor Jack Hunter's Committee for the dedication of the Federal Plaza and was on the board of the Bicentennial Committee in Youngstown. She was a frequent exhibitor at the Canfield Fair in the flower show division and also baked goods division, winning many blue ribbons and best of show.

Mary Frances also exhibited in the Lee County Fair in Florida in the baked goods division and was awarded Best of Show.

When Mr. Scheetz retired in 1979, they moved to Florida where she became a professional model. She was seen in commercials in Ohio and Florida. Mary Frances was chosen as one of the Top Ten contestants in Mrs. Florida Pageant. She served as a Docent at the Fine Arts Gallery at Edison Community College.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, William; a son, Charles Scheetz of Fort Myers; two daughters, Rosemary Scheetz-Bruce and husband Robert of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Patti Dionisio and husband Gary of Boardman; a sister, Anne Sherfel of Fort Myers; and a grandson, William Dionisio.

Mary Frances was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Nicholas and Stephen Skibo; and a sister Kay Slevin.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Hospice House for their tender care of Mary Frances.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice House in Poland in Mary Frances' memory.
