John Koneval

YOUNGSTOWN - A prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church in Youngstown, for Mr. John A. Koneval, 89, who died Monday evening at his residence.
John was born born on March 14, 1925, in Youngstown, the son of Paul and Helen Sinal Koneval. He and his four brothers and five sisters were raised on the Westside on Millet Street.
As a teenager, John worked at the Isaly's Dairy on Mahoning Avenue. He attended Chaney High School. At the age of 18 years old, he was drafted into World War II, in 1943, as a combat Engineer, serving his country until 1946 in the Army. John was employed by the Youngstown Police Dept. from 1951 until he retired in 1980 as a patrolman.
After he retired, he went to work for the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services as Head of Security for 25 years, retiring in 2005.
He met and married the love of his life, the former Betty Lou "Betsy" Bushling on Nov. 17, 1979.
Besides his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Russell "Rusty" Koneval of Austintown and Todd A. Crosby of Woodbridge, Va.; and a daughter, Jill A. Fonner of Austintown; a brother, William "Bill" Koneval of Richardson, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Rose Koneval of Austintown and Gerry Koneval of Youngstown. He has five grandchildren, Joshua and Megan Crosby, and Dylan, Corey and Jenna Fonner.
John was preceded in death by a baby daughter; a daughter, Kathryn "Kandi" Eberly; five sisters, Mary Walko, Helen Troxil, Frances Felik, Catherine and Clara Koneval; and three brothers, Steve "Pete," Roy and Bob Koneval.
John enjoyed golfing and bowling. He golfed and bowled for St. Christine's Leagues. He was a member of the church, a social member of the Saxon Club, belonged to the Croatian Club, the VFW and the Fraternal Order of Police, Youngstown Lodge No. 28.
Friends may call Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions maybe made to St. Christine Church or to the Wickcliffe Presbyterian Church.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and friends.
