Helena Washington

October 10, 1914 — September 9, 2014

YOUNGSTOWN - Helena B. Washington, another Christian soldier enlisted in the Army of the Lord, has rested.

"And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them." Revelation 14:13.

She quietly passed away Sept. 9, 2014, at the Dandridge Burgundi Manor.

By history, she was born Oct. 10, 1914, to the late Burgess Washington and Nellie Gruider Washington in Yazoo City, Miss.

Education was important to Helena, so much so that she completed her GED in the 70s at the South High School Night School Program.

Ms. Washington was the daughter of share croppers. The family migrated to Niles and then to Youngstown in the 1940s. She was a housekeeper at McKelvey's. Her work ethic was profound, and she was a dependable and hardworking employee; thus she became an exceptional asset to any business that deemed her service.

At the tender age of 10, Helena was baptized in Blue Lake, and joined the fellowship of the Hebrew Baptist Church in Yazoo City. Helena was a member of The Antioch Baptist Church in Youngstown for more than 70 years. Her social life was centered around the church. She held various offices of one of the Mothers of the church, and she sang in the choir when she was able.

She leaves to cherish her memories her caretakers, Maggie Hatchett Adams and Yvonne Hatchett-Irving; beloved cousins Martha Truss, Cindy Tabor, Janet Tabor and Merriam Tabor; and a host of relatives and friends.

Special thanks to Dandridge Burgundi Manor and care takers Lorraine Daniels and Gwendolyn Thomas, whom she dearly loved.

Preceding her in death are her parents; a brother, Burgess Washington Jr.; and three sisters, Bertha Jane and Carrie Washington, and Clemmie Hopkins.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Higgins- Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. until the service begins at noon.
