NORTH LIMA - Mrs. Helen Sklenar, 92, formerly of Austintown, passed away peacefully, with her family at her side, at The Assumption Village on Sunday morning. A prayer service will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church, officiated by Father John Keehner.
Helen was born Nov. 9, 1922, in Youngstown, a daughter of Stephen and Mary Berdis Nemergut.
She was a homemaker, a charter member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Austintown, its Altar and Rosary Society, and the First Catholic Slovak Union. Her greatest joys were cooking, baking, word search puzzles, bingo and watching the Cleveland Indians with her husband. Helen was the happiest when she was with her family. She shared her life with her "Hon," Lad A. Sklenar, whom she married Feb. 16, 1942.
Helen leaves two daughters, Dolores (Mario) Iacone of Austintown and Andrea (Joseph) Lutsi of Canfield; three sons, Dennis (Sandra) Sklenar of Boardman, Alan (Lisa) Sklenar and Kenan (Kathryn) Sklenar, both of Canfield; 15 grandchildren, Christine (Mark) Polivka, Carin (Douglas) Atkin, Lauren (Michael) Houser, Craig (Lindsay) Lutsi, Brant (Shabnam) Lutsi, Brian , Allison , Jason, Brandon, Jennifer, Brady, Jamie, Kelly, Eric and Ryan Sklenar; and nine great-grandchildren, Brett, Brooke and Brynne Polivka, Alexander and Benjamin Atkin, Ava, Emina, Mason and Noah Lutsi. She also leaves two sisters-in-law, Ethel (Sklenar) Capone and Lucille (Oleksak) Sklenar.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lad, her sister, Ann Buranich; and her brothers, Stephen, Joseph, Andrew, John and Raymond Nemergut. Two sisters, Mary and Margaret, and a brother, Michael, died as infants.
Friends may call Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Helen's family would like to thank the staff at The Assumption Village and Hospice of the Valley for the wonderful care provided to her. "Your assistance and concern will never be forgotten."
