Diane Folkwein

March 5, 1942 — January 17, 2017

CANFIELD - There will be a gathering of family and friends Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at the chapel at Forest Lawn Memorial Park for sharing the life of Diane E. Folkwein, 74, who passed away Tuesday morning at her home.

Diane was born March 5, 1942, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Francis C. and Wanda A. (Evans) Tartan.

Her husband, Donald W. Folkwein, whom she married July 9, 1977, passed away April 5, 2005.

Diane graduated from Boardman High School and attended Youngstown State University.

She was co-owner of the Landmark Restaurants. She could often be found in the kitchen of the Boardman location, cooking up something tasty for her regular customers, some of whom she dubbed the "counter critters."

Diane previously owned the Present Company in Canfield, a shop specializing in decorative arts and home accessories. Diane was a collector herself, particularly of books. She was an avid reader, reading three or four books simultaneously despite failing eye sight. In particular, she loved history. She devoured books and novels about British history, especially the Tudor era. She also loved American history. George Washington was her hero. Her visit to Mount Vernon, Washington's birthplace, was one of many trips she enjoyed with her late husband, Don. They visited New York several times for his business, where they especially liked spending time in Central Park. They also visited Britain, an experience that Diane treasured for the rest of her life.

Diane and Don also shared a love of animals. As co-owners of Southern Hills Stables, they owned several race horses, and their dogs, Sampson, KC and Boaz, who also predecease her, were like surrogate children.

Diane leaves her daughter, Tracy (Leon) LaTant of Orlando, Fla.; a son, Charles (Peggie) Prystash of Boardman; five grandchildren, Richard Smith, Ashley Cvetkovich, Ashlie Faber, Amber Glenn, and CJ Prystash; a beloved sister-in-law and best friend, Joan Burkert (Fred) of Canfield; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Diane was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Francis "Bud" and James Tartan.

Family and friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to All Caring Hospice, 6715 Tippecanoe Road, Canfield, OH 44406.

Diane's family would like to extend a special thank you to Carol, who went above and beyond providing exceptional care to their mother.
